Letter to the Editor, Enforcing prostitution laws no way to prevent HIV infection

The Province

Regarding the article on the release of sex worker Michelle Whonnock, reforming Canada's criminalized prostitution legislation, not sex workers, needs to be the target of HIV prevention efforts.

The prevalence of HIV among sex workers in Vancouver cited by The Province is misleading. The figure of 1.21 per cent was based on a limited 2006 sample of the most impoverished street-based female sex workers in Vancouver, accounting for only a portion of the sex industry in the city.
